Roundup last weeks exposition

Hi, hypernarrative is a blog by Wilbert Baan about Art, Media and Technology with a focus on interactive storytelling. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed with Google or Netvibes. I'll post a few messages a week. Thanks for visiting!

A short roundup of last weeks graduation exposition, closing the HKU / EMMA categorie of this weblog

The new hype in internet and web-application development by some described as the “web 2.0″ also had its influence on the graduation work presented at last weeks exposition. The amount of websites and applications was quite low. On the other hand all of these online projects are driven by the eager to organize and retrieve information. Students are experimenting with techniques to organize collections of video, images (based on user-provided form-analysis), hypertext and web-pages.

Some other projects highlighted:
(1) The Butterfly Project by Lammert Postma. The Butterfly Project is in fact a world wide web in itself. The project is - paradoxically - placing a virtual layer on the web. When using the Butterfly web-application users of this application are able to drop notes within the content of existing websites, highlight information or add hyperlinks to text. The project is working with a layer so no actual change is made to the “original” content beneath. It is like writing notes on a research paper or highlighting interesting pieces for later retrieval.

(2) Liz Turners archive for the Harper’s weekly review is another very interesting project. The exposition showed a working demo version (not yet connected to the actual database, but a local copy). The finished project will be launched soon. Liz has created a visual interface enabling visitors of the Harper’s website to sort within the news archive, visually. By dragging characters and events on the stage.

(3) Deze plek by Levien Nordeman. Deze plek is a mobile and interactive monument. The monument consists of 110 blocks. Via a website images can be added to the monument, creating a predefined shape/image projected on location. Emotional experiences with the physical space decide the color.

Time for Time

Experiments, HKU / EMMA, Interactive Video, Things I do - Wilbert on September 19, 2005 at 8:39 am, 1 Comment

A short webcam script I created for last weeks exposition. I wanted a monitor to refresh whenever someone would pass. Testing with the webcam-script resulted in another nice concept. I created a digital clock which will only display the correct time whenever you stand still. Forcing you to give some time to get the time.

Now I’m searching for a (store) window somewhere in a busy street.

This thing will not work without a webcam connected to your computer.

Graduated!

Two days ago I graduated as Bachelor of Arts and Technology and Master of Arts in European Media. Part of my graduation exegesis is an online project called ‘Medialandschap‘.

The concept for Medialandschap originated from a fascination for ‘citizen journalism’ and the low quality videos created with devices like mobile phones and photo cameras and the growing group of people equipped with this type of media. As such these short videos are most of the time without or with little context. By creating a design where people are able to get more context the value of the individual video grows. The system uses different axes to sort the information.

The interface is connecting videos to videos with subjects alike and places. It sizes videos depending on the popularity. Places show recent activity and the amount of videos posted in a specific location. The interface-design is inspired by the creative methods and designing techniques for information design used in books created by Bruce Mau and Rem Koolhaas. The concept of the interface aims at being very informative and playful. Browsing and clicking through movies without loading lists. At the top of the website are three different broadcasts sorted on popularity, time and things alike.

The project: Medialandschap (Citizen journalism, video, interactivity and simplicity).
