Yesterday I visited the Next Web conference in Amsterdam. Central theme was ‘how do we go from here’. When listening to the different speakers there was a clear visible line.
- Investors: Europe should make itself internationally visible (with great talents or startups and a next 10 billion or more sell-out)
- Identity: Online identity is clearly a problem (maybe the most serious one) given a boost by the emerging social web. Adopt to a standard for example OpenID.
- The Widgitized web: If you make something, make sure it can work together everything else that is relevant.
- Personalized (math vs. people): There is just too much relevant data it is still very hard to actually give people what they want before they ask it. Digg has 6- or 7.000 new articles a day submitted. Netvibes has available 85.000 feeds / widgets / podcasts and is handling 1.5 million unique feeds. Aggregators need aggregators…
Saul Klein (investor) mentioned something I hadn’t serious thought about since my graduation project. The broadband density of the physical European web is much higher. In other words, we have better coverage of connections (cable/dsl & umts/hdspa). The price of bandwidth dropped the last year. We should make stuff that takes advantage of this.

Dick Hardt had the best presentation. As a talented storyteller he flipped slides at the speed of light (Probably a recording of this will end up online within the next days). His company Sxipper build a Firefox plug-in for dealing with al the identity forms on websites. This looks like the perfect solution for all your problems. Last night I was installing it and was scared by a long unclear legal message about rights and giving them away. The plug-in combines all your personal information, you don’t want messages written by lawyers when installing it. Nonetheless his presentation about identity 2.0 was very interesting.
